Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse partners to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research on produce safety systems to address current challenges in the industry. - You will develop and deliver educational programs and materials to growers, industry professionals, and stakeholders. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to align produce safety initiatives. - You will provide expert consultation and technical assistance to support compliance with produce safety regulations. - You will engage with diverse communities to promote awareness and adoption of best practices. - You will publish research findings in scientific journals and present at conferences. - You will secure funding through grant writing to support ongoing research and extension activities. - You will mentor students and junior researchers to foster the next generation of produce safety experts. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical solutions. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for diverse audiences. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with federal agencies such as USDA or FDA. - Familiarity with the Salinas Valley agricultural community and its unique challenges. - Multilingual skills to engage with diverse grower communities. - Background in data analytics or GIS related to agricultural systems.
