Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that enhance food safety and public health. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote best practices and compliance with regulatory standards. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety systems. - You will conduct applied research to address challenges in produce safety and develop innovative solutions. - You will collaborate with farmers, industry partners, regulatory agencies, and community organizations to promote produce safety. - You will provide technical assistance and training to growers and agricultural professionals. - You will contribute to the development of policies and guidelines related to produce safety. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge. - You will participate in grant writing and secure funding to support produce safety initiatives. - You will engage in outreach activities to raise awareness about produce safety issues. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Sciences, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders. - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical applications. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within cooperative extension systems or similar outreach programs. - Familiarity with the agricultural landscape and produce industry in California. - Skills in data analysis and use of modern research technologies. - Bilingual abilities, particularly in Spanish, to engage with diverse communities.
