Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that enhance food safety and public health. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote best practices and compliance with regulatory standards. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety systems. - You will conduct applied research to identify and address challenges in produce safety. - You will collaborate with growers, industry partners, and regulatory agencies to promote safe agricultural practices. - You will provide technical assistance and training to support compliance with food safety regulations. - You will engage with community stakeholders to raise awareness about produce safety issues. - You will contribute to scientific publications and extension materials to disseminate research findings. - You will participate in grant writing and secure funding to support produce safety initiatives. - You will represent UC ANR at conferences, workshops, and industry meetings. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Science, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical applications. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with diverse agricultural communities in California. - Familiarity with the USDA-ARS research environment and collaborative projects. - Skills in data analysis and use of statistical software. - Bilingual abilities, particularly in Spanish, to enhance community outreach.
