Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research on produce safety systems to address current challenges in the industry. - You will develop and deliver educational programs and materials to growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local partners to align produce safety initiatives with regulatory requirements. - You will provide technical assistance and consultation to stakeholders to improve produce safety practices. - You will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific and industry conferences. - You will secure funding through grant writing to support ongoing research and extension activities. - You will mentor students and junior researchers to foster the next generation of agricultural scientists. - You will engage with the community to raise awareness about produce safety and sustainable agriculture. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of postdoctoral or professional experience in produce safety or related agricultural research. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven experience in designing and conducting applied research projects. - Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences, including growers, regulators, and academics. - Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within Cooperative Extension or similar outreach programs. - Established relationships with produce industry stakeholders in California. - Demonstrated success in securing competitive research funding. - Proficiency in data analysis software and geographic information systems (GIS).
