Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote best practices and regulatory compliance in produce safety. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research to develop innovative produce safety systems tailored to California’s agricultural landscape. - You will provide education and training programs for growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies on produce safety standards and practices. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to align research efforts with regulatory requirements and public health goals. - You will develop extension materials, including publications, workshops, and digital content, to disseminate research findings effectively. - You will engage with diverse agricultural communities to understand their needs and tailor outreach programs accordingly. - You will secure funding through grant writing and partnerships to support ongoing research and extension activities. - You will participate in interdisciplinary teams to address complex challenges in produce safety and food security. - You will mentor students and early-career professionals to build capacity in produce safety research and extension. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of postdoctoral or professional experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FDA’s Produce Safety Rule and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). - Proven experience in designing and conducting applied research projects. - Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific information to diverse audiences. - Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders from academia, government, and industry. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within cooperative extension systems or similar outreach programs. - Familiarity with California’s agricultural systems and produce supply chains. - Track record of successful grant writing and securing external funding. - Skills in data analysis and use of GIS or other relevant technologies.
