Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research on produce safety systems to address current challenges in the industry. - You will develop and deliver educational programs and materials to growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local partners to align produce safety initiatives with regulatory requirements. - You will provide technical assistance and consultation to stakeholders to improve produce safety practices. - You will publish research findings in scientific journals and present at conferences to disseminate knowledge. - You will engage with community groups and industry organizations to foster partnerships and outreach. - You will contribute to grant writing and securing funding to support research and extension activities. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Proven ability to conduct independent research and publish results. - Experience working collaboratively with government agencies and industry stakeholders. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within USDA or Cooperative Extension systems. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen research. - Demonstrated success in securing external funding through grants. - Familiarity with produce production systems in California.
