Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to improve produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote best practices and regulatory compliance in produce safety. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research to develop innovative produce safety systems tailored to California’s agricultural landscape. - You will provide education and training programs for growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local partners to align produce safety initiatives with current regulations and standards. - You will disseminate research findings through publications, presentations, and extension activities. - You will engage with diverse communities to address produce safety challenges and promote sustainable practices. - You will secure funding through grant writing and manage project budgets effectively. - You will mentor students and junior researchers to foster the next generation of agricultural scientists. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research or extension work. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical solutions. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder engagement. - Experience in grant writing and project management. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within cooperative extension systems. - Familiarity with California’s agricultural industry and produce supply chains. - Established relationships with regulatory agencies and industry partners. - Multilingual abilities to engage with diverse agricultural communities.
