Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research on produce safety systems to address current challenges in the industry. - You will develop and deliver educational programs and materials to growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local partners to align produce safety initiatives with regulatory requirements. - You will provide technical assistance and consultation to stakeholders to improve produce safety practices. - You will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific and industry conferences. - You will secure funding through grant writing to support ongoing research and extension activities. - You will mentor students and extension staff to build capacity in produce safety research and outreach. - You will participate in interdisciplinary teams to integrate produce safety with broader agricultural and environmental goals. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Science, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of postdoctoral or professional experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical solutions. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder engagement. - Experience in grant writing and securing external funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with diverse agricultural communities in California. - Familiarity with the USDA-ARS research environment and collaborative projects. - Skills in data analysis, GIS, or agricultural technology applications. - Bilingual abilities, particularly in Spanish, to enhance outreach efforts.
