Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research to develop innovative produce safety systems and best practices. - You will provide education and training to growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local partners to align produce safety initiatives. - You will disseminate research findings through publications, presentations, and outreach programs. - You will assist in developing policies and guidelines to improve produce safety standards. - You will engage with the agricultural community to identify emerging produce safety challenges. - You will mentor students and extension personnel to build capacity in produce safety. - You will secure funding through grants and partnerships to support research and extension activities. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FSMA Produce Safety Rule. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for diverse stakeholder engagement. - Proven ability to conduct independent research and secure external funding. - Experience with data analysis and scientific publication. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with federal agencies such as USDA or FDA. - Background in integrated pest management or crop protection. - Familiarity with California agriculture and produce supply chains. - Multilingual skills to engage diverse agricultural communities.
