Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and support the agricultural community. You will work closely with growers, researchers, and regulatory agencies to promote best practices and compliance with food safety standards. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and workshops focused on produce safety and regulatory compliance. - You will conduct applied research to identify and address challenges in produce safety systems. - You will collaborate with local growers, industry stakeholders, and government agencies to promote safe agricultural practices. - You will provide technical assistance and guidance to farmers and agricultural professionals. - You will contribute to the development of policies and guidelines related to produce safety. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge. - You will participate in grant writing and secure funding to support research and outreach activities. - You will engage with diverse communities to ensure inclusive and effective communication. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Sciences, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety, food safety systems, or agricultural extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders. - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical applications. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working in California’s agricultural industry or with specialty crops. - Familiarity with USDA-ARS research programs and cooperative extension systems. - Multilingual skills to engage with diverse farming communities. - Background in policy development related to food safety.
