Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research to develop innovative produce safety systems and best practices. - You will provide education and outreach to growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local partners to align produce safety initiatives. - You will develop training materials and deliver workshops to improve compliance with safety standards. - You will publish research findings in scientific journals and extension publications. - You will assist in securing funding through grant writing and partnership development. - You will advise on policy development related to produce safety and food security. - You will mentor students and support workforce development in agricultural safety. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act). - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical solutions. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for diverse stakeholder engagement. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with federal agencies such as USDA or FDA. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen research. - Familiarity with California agriculture and produce supply chains. - Demonstrated success in interdisciplinary collaboration.
