Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and support sustainable agricultural practices. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with growers, researchers, and regulatory agencies to enhance produce safety standards. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety to growers and industry stakeholders. - You will conduct applied research to identify and mitigate risks associated with produce safety. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to align produce safety initiatives with regulatory requirements. - You will provide technical assistance and consultation to farmers and agricultural professionals on best practices for produce safety. - You will engage with diverse communities to promote awareness and adoption of produce safety systems. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge widely. - You will participate in grant writing and secure funding to support produce safety projects. - You will contribute to the development of policies and guidelines that enhance produce safety standards. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical extension programs. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working directly with produce growers and agricultural communities in California. - Familiarity with microbial risk assessment and foodborne pathogen control. - Established network within federal and state regulatory agencies related to produce safety. - Multilingual skills, particularly Spanish, to engage with diverse agricultural communities.
