Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and enhance agricultural practices. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with researchers, growers, and regulatory agencies to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety to growers, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies. - You will conduct applied research to identify and address challenges in produce safety systems. - You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design and implement innovative safety protocols and best practices. - You will provide expert consultation and technical assistance to farmers and agricultural professionals. - You will engage with community partners and stakeholders to promote awareness and adoption of produce safety standards. - You will contribute to grant writing and secure funding to support research and extension activities. - You will publish research findings and extension materials in scientific journals and industry publications. - You will participate in professional development and represent UC ANR at conferences and industry events. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven ability to develop and deliver educational programs and training. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with diverse agricultural communities in California. - Familiarity with microbial food safety and postharvest handling practices. - Established network within the produce industry and regulatory agencies. - Multilingual skills, particularly Spanish, to effectively communicate with local growers.
