Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and enhance the sustainability of California’s produce industry. You will collaborate with researchers, growers, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with safety standards and promote best practices. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety systems. - You will conduct applied research to address challenges in produce safety and develop innovative solutions. - You will collaborate with stakeholders including farmers, industry partners, and government agencies to promote produce safety compliance. - You will provide technical assistance and training to growers and agricultural professionals. - You will monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of produce safety programs and recommend improvements. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge widely. - You will participate in grant writing and secure funding to support produce safety initiatives. - You will represent UC ANR at conferences, workshops, and industry meetings. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety, food safety systems, or agricultural extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical applications. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder engagement. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working directly with produce growers and agricultural communities. - Familiarity with the USDA-ARS research environment and collaborative projects. - Multilingual skills, particularly Spanish, to engage diverse communities. - Background in data analysis and use of technology in produce safety monitoring.
