Job Title: UC Cooperative Extension Specialist - Produce Safety Systems Company Overview: The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is a leading institution dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, sustainability, and education across California. Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and enhance agricultural practices. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety to growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies. - You will conduct applied research to identify and address challenges in produce safety systems. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to align produce safety initiatives with regulatory requirements. - You will provide technical assistance and consultation to growers and industry stakeholders to improve produce safety practices. - You will engage with community partners to promote awareness and adoption of best practices in produce safety. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge broadly. - You will participate in grant writing and secure funding to support produce safety projects. - You will mentor students and professionals to build capacity in produce safety and extension services. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Science, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical applications. - Experience in grant writing and securing external funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with federal agencies such as USDA or FDA. - Familiarity with the Salinas Valley agricultural community and its unique challenges. - Background in developing digital or remote learning tools for extension education. - Multilingual skills, particularly Spanish, to better serve diverse communities.
