Job Title: UC Cooperative Extension Specialist - Produce Safety Systems Company Overview: The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is a leading institution dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, sustainability, and community engagement across California. With a strong commitment to research, education, and outreach, UC ANR supports farmers, communities, and stakeholders to improve agricultural practices and food safety. Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse partners to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research on produce safety systems to address current challenges in the industry. - You will develop and deliver educational programs and materials to growers, industry professionals, and stakeholders. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to align produce safety initiatives with regulatory requirements. - You will engage with the agricultural community to identify needs and tailor extension programs accordingly. - You will publish research findings in scientific journals and present at conferences to disseminate knowledge. - You will provide expert consultation and technical assistance to growers and industry partners. - You will contribute to grant writing and securing funding to support ongoing research and extension activities. - You will mentor students and junior researchers to foster the next generation of agricultural scientists. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of postdoctoral or professional experience in produce safety or related agricultural research. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven experience in designing and conducting applied research projects. - Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences, including growers, regulators, and academics. - Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within Cooperative Extension or similar outreach programs. - Familiarity with the agricultural landscape and produce industry in California. - Track record of successful grant writing and securing research funding. - Skills in data analysis and use of modern research technologies.
