Job Title: UC Cooperative Extension Specialist - Produce Safety Systems Company Overview: The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is a leading institution dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, sustainability, and community engagement across California. With a strong commitment to research, education, and outreach, UC ANR supports farmers, communities, and policymakers to improve agricultural practices and food safety. Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research on produce safety systems to address current challenges in the industry. - You will develop and deliver educational programs and materials for growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local partners to align produce safety initiatives with regulatory requirements. - You will provide technical assistance and consultation to growers and stakeholders to improve produce safety practices. - You will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific and industry conferences. - You will secure funding through grant writing to support ongoing research and extension activities. - You will mentor students and extension staff to build capacity in produce safety research and outreach. - You will participate in interdisciplinary teams to integrate produce safety with broader agricultural and environmental goals. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of postdoctoral or professional experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical solutions. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration and outreach. - Experience in grant writing and securing external funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with diverse agricultural communities in California. - Familiarity with the USDA-ARS research environment and cooperative extension system. - Skills in data analysis, GIS, or precision agriculture technologies. - Bilingual abilities, particularly in Spanish, to engage with local growers.
