Job Title: UC Cooperative Extension Specialist - Produce Safety Systems Company Overview: The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is a leading institution dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, sustainability, and education. Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with stakeholders to improve food safety practices and protect public health. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research on produce safety systems to address current challenges in the industry. - You will develop and deliver educational programs and materials to growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local partners to promote best practices in produce safety. - You will provide expert consultation and technical assistance to stakeholders on produce safety compliance and risk management. - You will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. - You will secure funding through grant writing and manage project budgets effectively. - You will engage with diverse communities to ensure inclusive outreach and education. - You will contribute to policy development related to produce safety standards and regulations. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of postdoctoral or professional experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FDA’s Produce Safety Rule. - Proven experience in designing and conducting applied research projects. - Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences, including growers and policymakers. - Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within cooperative extension systems or agricultural outreach programs. - Familiarity with the USDA-ARS research environment and federal agricultural policies. - Skills in data analysis software and geographic information systems (GIS). - Bilingual abilities, particularly in Spanish, to engage with diverse agricultural communities.
