Job Title: UC Cooperative Extension Specialist - Produce Safety Systems Company Overview: The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is a leading institution dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, sustainability, and education. With a strong commitment to community engagement and scientific research, UC ANR supports California’s diverse agricultural industry through cutting-edge programs and expert guidance. Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and support the agricultural community. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with researchers, growers, and regulatory agencies to enhance produce safety practices. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety to growers, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies. - You will conduct applied research to identify and address produce safety challenges in California’s agricultural systems. - You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design and implement innovative produce safety interventions. - You will provide expert consultation and technical assistance to growers and industry partners on produce safety compliance and best practices. - You will engage with local, state, and federal agencies to align extension activities with regulatory requirements and public health goals. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge broadly within the agricultural community. - You will participate in grant writing and secure funding to support produce safety initiatives. - You will represent UC ANR at conferences, workshops, and stakeholder meetings to promote produce safety awareness. What You Bring: - You have a Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Sciences, or a related field. - You possess at least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - You have strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - You demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder engagement. - You have experience in designing and delivering educational programs and workshops. - You are proficient in research methodologies and data analysis relevant to agricultural safety. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working directly with produce growers and agricultural communities in California. - Established relationships with regulatory agencies such as FDA and USDA. - Proven success in securing grant funding for agricultural research or extension projects. - Familiarity with emerging technologies in produce safety and foodborne pathogen detection.
