Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse partners to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research on produce safety systems to address current challenges in the industry. - You will develop and deliver educational programs and materials to growers, industry professionals, and stakeholders. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to align produce safety initiatives with regulatory requirements. - You will engage with diverse communities to promote best practices in produce safety and sustainability. - You will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. - You will provide technical assistance and consultation to growers and industry partners. - You will secure funding through grant writing to support ongoing research and extension activities. - You will mentor students and junior researchers to foster the next generation of agricultural scientists. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of postdoctoral or professional experience in produce safety or related agricultural research. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven experience in conducting applied research and extension activities. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within cooperative extension systems. - Established relationships with produce growers and industry organizations in California. - Demonstrated success in securing competitive research funding. - Proficiency in data analysis software and geographic information systems (GIS).
