Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote best practices and regulatory compliance in produce safety. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research to develop innovative produce safety systems tailored to California’s agricultural landscape. - You will engage with growers, industry partners, and regulatory agencies to disseminate research findings and promote adoption of best practices. - You will design and deliver educational programs, workshops, and training sessions focused on produce safety. - You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to address challenges related to food safety and public health. - You will contribute to grant writing and secure funding to support ongoing research and extension activities. - You will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. - You will provide expert consultation to stakeholders on produce safety regulations and compliance. - You will participate in statewide initiatives to improve food safety standards and policies. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of postdoctoral or professional experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act). - Proven experience in designing and conducting applied research and extension programs. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Ability to work collaboratively with academic, industry, and government partners. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within cooperative extension systems. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen research. - Established network within California’s agricultural community. - Experience with grant writing and managing funded projects.
