Job Title: UC Cooperative Extension Specialist - Produce Safety Systems Company Overview: The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is a leading institution dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, sustainability, and community engagement across California. With a strong commitment to research, education, and outreach, UC ANR supports farmers, communities, and stakeholders to improve agricultural practices and food safety. Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and support the agricultural industry. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with researchers, growers, and regulatory agencies to enhance produce safety standards and practices. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety to growers, industry professionals, and community stakeholders. - You will conduct applied research to identify and address challenges in produce safety systems. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to align extension efforts with regulatory requirements and industry needs. - You will provide technical assistance and consultation to growers and agricultural organizations on best practices for produce safety. - You will lead outreach initiatives to promote awareness and adoption of produce safety standards. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge broadly. - You will participate in grant writing and secure funding to support produce safety projects. - You will mentor students and junior staff involved in produce safety research and extension activities. What You Bring: - You bring a Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Sciences, or a related field. - You have at least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - You possess strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - You demonstrate the ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical extension programs. - You are proficient in grant writing and project management. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with diverse agricultural communities in California. - Established relationships with regulatory agencies and industry stakeholders. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen research. - Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration and team leadership.
