Job Title: UC Cooperative Extension Specialist - Produce Safety Systems Company Overview: The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is a leading institution dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, sustainability, and community engagement across California. With a strong commitment to research, education, and outreach, UC ANR supports farmers, industry professionals, and local communities to improve agricultural practices and food safety. Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research to develop innovative produce safety systems tailored to California's agricultural landscape. - You will engage with growers, industry partners, and regulatory agencies to disseminate best practices and compliance strategies. - You will design and deliver educational programs and workshops to improve produce safety knowledge among stakeholders. - You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to address emerging challenges in produce safety and foodborne illness prevention. - You will contribute to scientific publications, grant proposals, and extension materials to support ongoing research and outreach efforts. - You will provide expert consultation and technical assistance to growers and industry professionals. - You will monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of produce safety interventions and adjust strategies accordingly. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of postdoctoral or professional experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FSMA Produce Safety Rule compliance. - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical extension programs. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Experience working collaboratively with growers, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within a Cooperative Extension system or similar outreach organization. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen detection related to fresh produce. - Familiarity with California's agricultural systems and produce supply chains. - Grant writing and project management experience.
