Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse partners to improve food safety practices and protect public health. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research on produce safety systems to identify risks and develop mitigation strategies. - You will engage with growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies to disseminate best practices and educational materials. - You will develop and deliver training programs and workshops focused on produce safety compliance and innovation. - You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate scientific findings into practical extension programs. - You will contribute to grant writing and secure funding to support ongoing research and outreach activities. - You will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. - You will provide expert consultation to stakeholders on produce safety regulations and standards. - You will participate in statewide and national initiatives to advance produce safety policies and practices. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of postdoctoral or professional experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FSMA Produce Safety Rule. - Proven ability to conduct interdisciplinary research and translate findings into extension programs. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with diverse agricultural communities in California. - Familiarity with the USDA-ARS research environment and collaborative projects. - Background in food microbiology or postharvest technology. - Bilingual skills, particularly in Spanish, to enhance outreach effectiveness.
