Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and enhance the sustainability of California’s produce industry. You will work closely with growers, researchers, and regulatory agencies to promote best practices and compliance with food safety standards. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety systems. - You will conduct applied research to address challenges in produce safety and develop innovative solutions. - You will collaborate with USDA-ARS and other partners to advance produce safety initiatives. - You will provide technical assistance and training to growers, industry stakeholders, and regulatory agencies. - You will engage with diverse communities to promote awareness and adoption of produce safety practices. - You will contribute to scientific publications, grant proposals, and extension materials. - You will participate in policy discussions and help shape produce safety regulations. - You will manage project budgets and report on program outcomes. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Science, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FSMA Produce Safety Rule. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with diverse stakeholders. - Proven ability to develop and deliver educational programs and training. - Experience in grant writing and managing research projects. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with USDA-ARS or other federal agricultural agencies. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen research. - Fluency in Spanish or other languages relevant to California’s agricultural communities. - Experience with data analysis and statistical software.
