Full Description

IWU is seeking an IT Infographics & Strategic Communications Consultant (Independent Contractor ‑ 1099 / Contract-to-Hire) for a large-scale technology reorganization project. ABOUT IWU TECHNOLOGY ABOUT THE ROLE: • IWU is seeking an IT Visual Communications Consultant to help turn complex technology work into clear, accurate, compelling visual communication. This role sits at the intersection of IT operations, information security, enterprise architecture, systems design, executive communication, and strategic storytelling. • This is not a generic graphic design but an internal communications role. IWU needs someone who can understand technical concepts, ask good questions, structure information clearly, and produce visual artifacts that help leaders, technologists, and stakeholders understand what is happening, why it matters, and what decisions or actions are required. • You will create infographics, diagrams, roadmaps, executive visuals, operating models, architecture explainers, security awareness materials, system maps, transformation narratives, and presentation-ready communication assets. Your work will help IT explain complex initiatives such as AI-first re-platforming, multi-site infrastructure, identity modernization, cybersecurity posture, application rationalization, data architecture, incident response, operating models, financial impacts, and long-term strategic roadmaps. • You will be an experienced professional individual contributor: you work independently with general supervision, tackle difficult but typically non-complex problems, and influence peers through clarity, structure, accuracy, and well-designed communication. IT Storytelling and Visual Communication • Translate complex IT initiatives into clear visual narratives for executives, staff, faculty, finance, business stakeholders, and technology teams. • Develop visual communication assets that explain IT operations, cybersecurity, systems design, architecture standards, service delivery, and strategic roadmaps. • Help IT leaders communicate why initiatives matter, what problems they solve, what risks they reduce, and what outcomes they enable. Architecture, Systems, and Roadmap Visualization • Produce system diagrams, application maps, integration flows, data movement diagrams, infrastructure views, security models, and high-level architecture visuals. • Build strategic roadmaps that show sequencing, dependencies, milestones, risks, ownership, and business outcomes. • Help maintain consistent visual language and design standards for technology transformation, including icons, diagram standards, color conventions, templates, and documentation patterns. IT Operations and Information Security Communications • Develop cybersecurity communication assets such as security awareness visuals, risk explainers, control models, identity diagrams, threat summaries, and executive security briefings. • Translate complexity into plain-language visuals without oversimplifying important technical or risk details. • Assist with visual materials for governance, steering committees, architecture review boards, security reviews, and executive updates. Stakeholder Collaboration • Facilitate working sessions to clarify messages, simplify visual structure, and identify the right level of detail for each audience. • Adapt communication style for different audiences, from highly technical engineers to executive leadership and non-technical stakeholders. • Use feedback well and revise quickly while maintaining accuracy and visual quality. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: Required • According to Indiana Wesleyan University policy, all employees and contract-to-hire contractors must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement. • 4+ years of progressive experience in IT communications, technical writing, visual communication, information design, enterprise architecture support, IT documentation, business analysis, or a related technology communication role. • Demonstrated ability to turn complex technical information into clear visual communication. • Strong portfolio or work samples showing infographics, diagrams, roadmaps, executive visuals, technical explainers, system diagrams, or similar artifacts. • Understanding of enterprise IT concepts such as applications, infrastructure, cybersecurity, cloud/on-premises systems, data platforms, identity, integrations, and IT operations. • Ability to create both executive-level visual summaries and more detailed technical diagrams. • Strong written communication skills with the ability to simplify without distorting technical meaning. • Experience creating executive-ready PowerPoint decks, one-page summaries, diagrams, process flows, or strategic communication materials. • Ability to work independently with subject matter experts, ask clarifying questions, and produce accurate communication assets from incomplete or complex inputs. • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Information Systems, Graphic Design, Technical Communication, Business, Computer Science, or a related field – or equivalent demonstrated experience. Strongly Preferred • Experience with tools such as PowerPoint, Miro, Lucidchart, Visio, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, D2, Mermaid, Confluence, SharePoint, or similar platforms. • Familiarity with higher education, nonprofit, healthcare, financial services, or other regulated environments. • Experience supporting CIO, CTO, CISO, Enterprise Architecture, IT Operations, or Transformation Office communications. • Familiarity with cybersecurity awareness concepts such as ITIL, NIST, Zero Trust, enterprise architecture, data governance, and application rationalization. • Experience building repeatable visual systems, icon libraries, templates, diagram standards, or communication playbooks. How You Work • You make complexity understandable without making it inaccurate. • You think visually and structurally – every diagram has a purpose, audience, and message. • You ask good questions before designing. • You write clearly and avoid unnecessary jargon. • You can work from rough notes, whiteboards, meeting transcripts, diagrams, and SME interviews. • You are comfortable working across technical and non-technical audiences. • You revise quickly and treat feedback as part of the design process. • You care about consistency, accuracy, and stewardship of institutional knowledge. WHY THIS ROLE? • High leverage at an inflection point. IWU is making foundational technology decisions for a decade-long transformation, and clear communication is essential to alignment and execution. • Breadth across the IT enterprise. You will work across AI, cybersecurity, infrastructure, applications, data, identity, operations, and strategic planning. • Real influence through clarity. Your work will help leaders understand complex decisions, help teams align around shared designs, and help stakeholders see the value of technology transformation. • Mission-aligned institution. IWU is a Christ-centered university; technology communication should serve learners, staff, faculty, and leadership with clarity, wisdom, and stewardship.
