Brief Description: The Associate Director, Employee Relations will lead UBC’s employee relations and workplace conduct processes, which are in place to resolve staff concerns and to build understanding, transparency, and trust across the organization. This role will oversee and monitor complaint systems, carry out dispute resolution, conduct internal investigations, and manage policies related to conduct. The role will educate managers and staff on these policies and manage difficult conversations. Specific job duties: • Conduct investigations, draft investigation reports, and produce actionable findings and recommendations in an efficient, thorough, timely and professional manner. • Facilitate effective and approachable communications with all persons involved in the complaint process by conducting intake and dialogue with persons raising concerns, questions or complaints and recommend avenues toward solution. • Monitor and oversee the complaints tracking and processes to identify trends. • Advise and guide departmental leadership, managers, supervisors and staff through the complaints and investigation processes. • Review, update and develop policies and procedures related to personal conduct and employee relations. • Create and conduct trainings for leadership, managers, and supervisors on procedures related to the complaint process, investigation process, non-retaliation policies, negotiating conflict and managing difficult conversations. • Partner with other members of the Human Resources team on organization efforts related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. • Make recommendations for progressive disciplinary action process (if applicable) for delivery and processing. • Create talking points/scripts for management teams to deliver appropriate conversations with employees. • Collaborate with Benefits teams to review leave of absences cases and ADA Accommodations for any actions that may be needed. • Lead Exit Interview process for UBC to capture global information on exiting employees and accurate report findings. • Monthly reporting of Exit Interviews, Employee Relations, and Global Introductory Period items. Other reporting as needed. • Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information. • Proactively working with management teams on assessing talent to address issues. Supervisory Responsibility: • N/A Desired Skills and Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required; Master’s or law degree highly preferred. • 5-8 years of human resource management experience required, with emphasis in personnel investigations, employment law, conflict management and/or employee relations experience. • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP strongly preferred. • Experience in mediation of difficult conversations and disputes to word towards a common solution. • General understanding of employment law, including anti-discrimination laws. • Commitment to diversity, multi-cultural experience, and sensitivity to issues of inclusion, marginalization, discrimination, harassment. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. • Strong supervisory and leadership skills. • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations. • Knowledge of and experience with varied human resource information systems. • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
