Salary $105,310.53 - $175,078.75 Annually Location Huntersville, NC Job Type Full time Job Number 202600159 Department ELECTRICITIES Opening Date 01/12/2026 Job Description Performs work in the operation and maintenance of the Town’s electric system in an economical, efficient, safe, and reliable manner. Delegates and supervises the activities of the division’s crews to ensure completion of work to meet customer demands. Work is performed under the general guidance of the Electric Systems Director. Essential Duties of the Position The following duties are those considered most essential to the position. This does not preclude the delegation of other duties considered as necessary by management to successfully complete an assignment or project. • Assigns and prioritizes the work of the line and service staff in the operation, maintenance, and development, of the town’s electric distribution system, including overhead and underground electric lines and equipment, and load management. • Investigates and implements ways to improve system reliability and efficiency. • Monitors system loading and develops emergency overload contingencies. • Oversees routine and emergency substation maintenance and repair activities and ensures apparatus is being maintained according to manufacturer’s specifications. • Serves as the project manager for all capital projects and completes them within the confines of the approved budget. • Develops, directs and enforces the safety program for the Line and Service staff, conducts routine safety meetings, and schedules annual trainings. • Ensures compliance with and maintains knowledge of all applicable local, state and federal regulations related to the operation of an electric distribution system, including PCB handling and disposal, OSHA and EPA regulations. • Adheres to the most current edition of the APPA safety manual and enforces compliance for division employees. • Monitors and ensures adherence to Town policies, procedures, and standards. • Communicates with the public, vendors, and contractors; meets with customers to assess and act on requests for services, as appropriate. • Coordinates electric distribution activities with outside agencies, other utility providers, contractors and/or field engineers. • Oversees line locators and ensures compliance with applicable NC811 laws. • Participates in the recruitment and selection of subordinate employees; makes recommendations regarding discipline and termination; conducts employee performance evaluations. • Assists in development of annual department budget, identifying needs such as equipment and system improvement projects. • Prepares, reviews and negotiates contracts with outside labor forces for electric system maintenance and construction, including line and service, tree trimming and substation maintenance. • Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports; creates and presents information to outside parties when necessary. • Responds to emergencies callbacks and assists in coordinating power restoration and emergency services when required. • Acts as the Electric Systems Director in their absence. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Required Education and Experience Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of electric distribution systems, load capacity and basic design for municipal electric / utility operations; knowledge of local and regional electric systems; Knowledge of occupational hazards and related safety practices and ability to direct staff accordingly.; knowledge of public administration practices related to personnel and fiscal management; knowledge of and ability to apply OSHA 1910.269, NESC, APPA Safety Manual and other regulatory requirements pertaining to the operation of an electrical distribution system; knowledge of and ability to prioritize work during emergency situations; ability to review and analyze plans and specifications for the construction and maintenance of electric distribution systems; ability to report to work regularly and the stamina to work extended hours during power outages, natural disasters, emergency situations or special projects; ability to follow operational policies and procedures; ability to prepare technical reports; ability to plan and supervise the work of skilled, semiskilled or unskilled workers over a wide geographic area; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with government officials, associates, contractors and the general public. Associate’s degree in electrical engineering, public utility management or related field, and 5 to 7 years of experience in electric utility systems, including supervisory and/or management experience. Or a combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills to complete the essential functions and job responsibilities of this position. Experience with project management and coordination is preferred; municipal electric systems is highly desirable for this role. Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License Class A (CDL) valid in the State of North Carolina. This position is subject to Emergency Call Back during emergency situations and inclement weather. Supplemental Information This position’s physical requirements involve heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: balancing, feeling, hearing, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, reaching, speaking, standing, visual acuity, and/or walking. Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently working near moving mechanical parts and traffic, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold and exposure to extreme heat; work is generally in a very loud noise location.
