Director, Community Business Development Full-Time/Remote We have fully remote options if you reside in one of the following states: CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, IA, IL, KS, MA, MD, MN, MO, NC, NE, NH, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI Additionally, you must be authorized to work in the U.S. and cannot work from outside the country. Position Summary: The Director, Community Business Development reports to the Vice President, Community Development and leads the development of new initiatives and partnerships with local government recycling programs. This role drives public sector engagement by identifying funding opportunities, building strategic relationships, and supporting grant and proposal development to expand impact. The Director works cross-functionally to align business development efforts with organizational priorities and support growth as the organization evolves. What You’ll Do: Public Sector Business Development • Drive funding growth in existing and emerging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) states through strategic business development. • Identify, pursue, and secure new business opportunities and community partnerships to expand recycling system impact. • Build and manage partner relationships, including outreach, presentations, proposals, and contract negotiation. • Collaborate cross-functionally to align business development with programmatic and operational capacity. • Interpret EPR regulations to support community partners and effective problem-solving. • Track pipeline performance and maintain accurate CRM records. Grant Development and Implementation • Align public sector business development with granting and research strategies to maximize system impact. • Partner with Participation and Capture and cross-functional teams to design and deliver custom, high-impact grant initiatives aligned with community needs and organizational priorities. • Support community engagement, grant development, budget management, and implementation of regional and national impact initiatives. • Contribute to consulting projects and disseminate research findings in accessible formats to funders and stakeholders. Required Skills & Qualifications: • 5+ years of progressive experience in public recycling systems, business development, consulting, fundraising, or related fields, including 2+ years in a leadership role • Strong knowledge of the recycling system, including collection, MRF operations, policy, community program design, contracting, and education/outreach • Proven experience leading or supporting complex programs, strategy development, business development, and revenue-generating initiatives within cross-functional teams • Demonstrated success in proposal development and funding or partnership growth • Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder engagement skills • Highly organized problem-solver able to work independently, manage ambiguity, and juggle multiple priorities • Experience maintaining CRM records and proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and collaboration tools (e.g., Notion) Preferred Skills: • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. • Strong commitment to the recycling system and mission-driven work. • Strategic, analytical experience in public recycling, nonprofits, or public–private partnerships. • Ability to design innovative programs, translate data into action, and collaborate across teams in dynamic environments. $125,000 - $135,000 per year Other Requirements: • This position will require overnight and out-of-state travel for business activities. • An employee driving on company business shall have a valid driver’s license. An employee driving a privately-owned vehicle on company business shall have liability insurance on the privately-owned vehicle. • The employee must be able to successfully pass a background check.
