Job Title: Senior Backend Engineer (Python / Django) Location: Remote (Preference for candidates located in or near Des Moines, IA) Employment Type: Full-Time Overview Our client, an innovative organization operating within the financial services and lending technology space, is seeking an experienced Senior Backend Django Engineer to help strengthen and modernize a complex SaaS platform. This role will focus heavily on backend architecture, API development, and data integrity improvements across a system that supports sophisticated financial workflows. The ideal candidate will have strong experience working with Python, Django, and PostgreSQL, along with the ability to operate effectively in high-complexity environments where data accuracy and system reliability are critical. A significant portion of this role involves improving existing codebases, cleaning up inconsistent or poorly structured data, and stabilizing backend services, while building scalable APIs and services that support financial products and integrations. Candidates with experience in loan origination systems, lending platforms, credit unions, or broader financial services technology environments are strongly preferred. Key Responsibilities Backend Engineering & System Architecture • Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Python, Django, and PostgreSQL. • Contribute to architectural improvements for a complex SaaS platform supporting financial workflows. • Build and enhance scalable backend services and APIs supporting internal systems and external integrations. • Collaborate with frontend engineers, product leaders, and platform architects to deliver reliable features and improvements. API Development & Integrations • Design and maintain public-facing and internal APIs that support external integrations and partner platforms. • Ensure APIs are secure, performant, and well-documented. • Improve reliability and consistency of integration points across the platform. Data Integrity & Codebase Improvements • Analyze and remediate inconsistent or poorly structured data within existing systems. • Refactor and improve legacy backend code to increase maintainability, reliability, and performance. • Establish best practices around data governance, validation, and database design. Platform Complexity & Workflow Management • Work within systems that support complex financial workflows and configurable business rules. • Contribute to platform design that supports multi-tenant environments and configuration-heavy product features. • Ensure backend systems can support evolving product requirements without sacrificing stability. Engineering Collaboration • Work within a high-accountability engineering environment where ownership and quality are critical. • Collaborate with technical leadership to identify areas of risk, inefficiency, or technical debt. • Help drive engineering best practices across backend services. Required Qualifications • 8-10+ years of backend software engineering experience. • Strong experience developing applications using Python and Django. • Deep experience with PostgreSQL, including schema design, optimization, and data integrity practices. • Experience designing and supporting public-facing APIs and backend services. • Experience working with complex systems, workflows, and large-scale production platforms. • Ability to work independently and take ownership of critical platform components. Preferred Qualifications • Experience working within loan origination systems (LOS) or lending platforms. • Background in credit unions, banks, or financial services technology environments. • Experience building or maintaining multi-tenant SaaS platforms. • Experience with configuration-heavy systems where business logic is highly customizable. • Experience improving legacy codebases and stabilizing complex production systems.
