Full Description

About Us Powered by one of the largest global newsrooms in sports media, The Athletic brings sports fans the most comprehensive stories about the teams, sports and athletes they love. The Athletic’s newsroom of 450+ full-time staff delivers in-depth coverage of hundreds of professional and college teams across more than 47 North American markets and all 20 football clubs in the English Premier League, as well as many Championship clubs. About the Role We're looking for an analytics-focused Data Engineer to join our expanding data department. This individual will play a key role within our Data Engineering team, primarily focusing on the operationalization and enrichment of our core data products. This requires familiarity with common data processing tools and languages (such as SQL, Python, and DBT) and adherence to data governance best practices. While this is the primary focus, all members of our Data Engineering team are expected to be generalists, capable of contributing to, reviewing code for, and advising on the entire data stack. This position is ideally suited for a seasoned data analyst eager to transition into the field of Data Engineering. Alternatively, it presents an excellent opportunity for an existing Data Engineer who desires a role with a greater emphasis on in-depth data analysis and interpretation. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundational understanding of data principles and a passion for both the architectural and analytical aspects of data management. This role is 100% remote for candidates currently residing in either the United States or Canada. \n Responsibilities Own the Enrichment layer of our data stack, primarily through the creation and maintenance of data products and marts used by our analysts and scientists. Develop, maintain, and expand the use of a centralized Metric Library intended to be the source of truth for analysts for KPIs across the company. Embed with analysts to understand the most pressing needs and design solutions that are both efficient and scalable. Practice independently by producing and deploying your own solutions. Participate in team best practices, including agile sprint planning and peer review. Contribute to and maintain our data ecosystem through deployment of infrastructure, creation of pipelines and maintenance of our data lake. Requirements 2+ years of experience as a data analyst or data engineer, preference for experience in clickstream data. Expert level knowledge of SQL, Databases (prefer BigQuery and Redshift) and Git. Knowledge of Python (preference for Airflow) and Cloud Infrastructure. Familiarity with event-based architecture (preference for Kafka). Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, both at the executive level and with peers and cross-functional teams, \n The Athletic offers unique perks and benefits to all full-time employees based on their country of residence. Our comprehensive US benefits package includes: - Highly competitive, employer-contributed medical, dental, vision, basic life and disability insurance plans. - Savings accounts for medical, wellness, and childcare expenses. - 401k retirement savings plan and employer match. - Paid time off including paid sick leave, 12 paid holidays, 15 days of accrued vacation to start, and up to 20 weeks of Paid Parental Leave.
