POSITION SUMMARY Reporting to the Sr. Director, Publishing and Global Partnerships, the Managing Editor/Senior Managing Editor oversees the peer review of our flagship journal, Aesthetic Surgery Journal (ASJ). ASJ is celebrating its 30th anniversary and is #1 in both plastic and aesthetic surgery based on its Impact Factor, 3.9. We have a well-established team and are looking for the right candidate to bring publishing knowledge and editorial excellence to the role. The ME/SME is supported by the Managing Editor and other staff. The candidate will work directly with the Editor in Chief and will ensure each author receives a thorough, timely, and accurate manuscript review. The ME/SME is responsible for all ScholarOne Manuscript queues for peer review, review of galley proofs and compiled issue proofs, supplement management, data analysis and reporting and relationship building with the editorial board, reviewers, and editors. The ME/SME will contribute new innovations such as with AI and technology, navigate ethics issues, perform strategic development and management of calls for papers, and maintain a close relationship with our publishing partners at Oxford University Press. The ME/SME will ideally have basic graphic design and video editing abilities to contribute to marketing and social media campaigns, be proficient with video calls (Zoom, Teams) and Microsoft Office programs, and will travel within the US 3-4 times per year as needed. This is a fully remote position and requires a formal office in which to work. Professionalism in appearance and communication is essential in this role, which is often external-facing and requires interactions with plastic surgeons, society staff, and society leadership. POSITION REQUIREMENTS · An undergraduate degree (BA or BS) or higher is required (English, Journalism, Media preferred); · A minimum of 5 years of experience in scholarly publishing is required; · Proficiency and clear understanding of the AMA style guide; · Former publisher/society/journal employment managing single- or double-blind, peer-reviewed journals in STM (science, technology, medicine) is required; · Strong proficiency in ScholarOne Manuscripts is required; · A detail-oriented person is requisite for success in this role; · Candidate must be proficient in MS Office. Strong PowerPoint acumen is required; · Excellent written, verbal, communication, and presentation skills along with a professional appearance is required; · Strong diplomacy, tact, and communication skills are required in this role including the ability to handle confidential information; · A formal and dedicated home office is required, without household distractions, due to the nature of video conferencing calls; · Membership in publishing societies/associations is recommended but not required (eg, WAME, ISMTE, COPE, CSE) etc.; · Graphic design and video editing (PhotoShop, Canva, Premier, FinalCutPro) are preferred but not required; · Experience managing direct reports is preferred but not required; · This is a full-time role, and our expectation is the winning candidate will not be engaged in secondary or consulting roles that will compete with their ability to perform their duties competently during the workday.
