Provide legal guidance, prepare educational materials, research legislation, and support legislative processes for municipal clients.
JD degree, licensed to practice law in Texas, good standing with State Bar, and preferably 2 years municipal law experience.
The Texas Municipal League (TML) is an association of over 1,100 cities that provides legal, educational, and legislative services to its members. TML hired its first lawyer in the 1950s, and since that time, the legal team has grown to include six attorneys. We are looking for a highly motivated, team-playing attorney to join our team in the capacity of Legal Counsel. An ideal candidate is excited about learning something new every day, is an excellent writer, can handle public speaking, and can respond in a timely manner to requests for legal assistance. This position offers a hybrid work schedule (in-office and remote). Under the supervision of the Director of Legal Services, the Legal Counsel will provide legal guidance to appointed and elected city officials and city attorneys; assist with the preparation and presentation of educational programs; prepare handbooks on laws relevant to city officials, magazine articles, and other written materials; research and draft amicus briefs and attorney general comments; review and analyze legislation and state agency rules; and monitor legislation and testify or prepare written testimony, as necessary, before legislative committees and state agencies. A doctor of jurisprudence or bachelor of laws from an accredited college or university is required. An applicant must also be licensed to practice law in the State of Texas and be in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. In addition, two years of experience in municipal law is desirable, though it is not required. TML offers excellent benefits including hybrid work schedules (remote and in-office); participation in the Texas Municipal Retirement System; a 457(b) deferred compensation plan; health benefits; paid holidays, paid time-off; paid State Bar dues; and more. TML is eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. The minimum salary is $90,000. The salary is commensurate with experience. The position is open until it is filled. Please submit your resume, a cover letter, a writing sample, and your minimum salary requirement.
