What to Expect We are seeking a Palo Alto, CA based engineering manager to lead Tesla’s HV Battery Design Engineering Launch and Sustaining Team. This position offers outsized leverage on the mission to deliver affordable, safe, and reliable vehicles that accelerate Earth’s transition to sustainable energy. You will manage the team responsible for Tesla’s highest volume battery programs (Model 3 & Y) and serve as the design point of contact. Scope includes all structural, thermal, electrical, and sensing components required to make a large battery pack out of hundreds of cells. Responsibilites span continuous product improvement, new product variants, supply chain reinforcement (qualifying alternative materials/suppliers), supporting Gigafactory Nevada battery factory and root cause investigation of field failures. What You'll Do • Lead and grow team of engineers who are design point of contact responsible for all batteries found in Model 3 & Y Tesla vehicles (3+ battery variants) in North America • Fully understand the battery designs, and the manufacturing systems that build them (factory process and equipment) • Establish design tools, protocols, workflows, and documentation that improve efficiency & rigor • Stay in sync with Austin, Berlin and Shanghai peer managers to improve design team practices and streamline handoffs between our development & production sites • Launch new battery variants based on existing architectures, lead redesign of components to improve cost and performance metrics • Triage, coordinate & drive response to emergent issues (validation, factory, supply, etc.) • Recruit & develop world-class talent, manage performance, and nurture team culture • Work with field quality and reliability to translate field failures into actionable part design changes, driving warranty improvements • Set ambitious & quantitative OKRs, inspire employees, maintain high standard of work, justify resources and win leadership alignment • Interface with product and executive leadership; convert leadership direction into action, represent the team at product level, create proposals and drive alignment with partner teams What You'll Bring • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience • 7+ years of technical experience, minimum 2 years demonstrated leadership of other engineers • Ability to travel up to 20% of the year to different Tesla factories as well as suppliers • Strong engineering fundamentals in heat transfer, electrical, mechanics, and basic electronics • Background in design for high-volume & automated manufacturing processes, such as plastic injection molding, metal stamping, thermoforming, welding/brazing, plating, PCBA/FPC, and bonding • Practiced in concept generation, CAD, tolerancing (GD&T), statistical analysis, DFM, DFMEA • Strong technical communication (live reporting, written form, and presentation of data) • Natural inclination to organize & motivate teams of people and improve workflows Compensation and Benefits Benefits Along with competitive pay, as a full-time Tesla employee, you are eligible for the following benefits at day 1 of hire: • Medical plans > plan options with $0 payroll deduction • Family-building, fertility, adoption and surrogacy benefits • Dental (including orthodontic coverage) and vision plans, both have options with a $0 paycheck contribution • Company Paid (Health Savings Accounts) HSA Contribution when enrolled in the High-Deductible medical plan with HSA • Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) • 401(k) with employer match, Employee Stock Purchase Plans, and other financial benefits • Company paid Basic Life, AD&D • Short-term and long-term disability insurance (90 day waiting period) • Employee Assistance Program • Sick and Vacation time (Flex time for salary positions, Accrued hours for Hourly positions), and Paid Holidays • Back-up childcare and parenting support resources • Voluntary benefits to include: critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident insurance, theft & legal services, and pet insurance • Weight Loss and Tobacco Cessation Programs • Tesla Babies program • Commuter benefits • Employee discounts and perks program Expected Compensation $140,800 - $211,200/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
