We strive to build a team of like-minded experts in both tax and technology who align with our brand purpose, are advocates for our customers and have a fresh, non-traditional approach to the tax industry. Taxwell is a leading digital tax filing platform formed in 2022 from the combination of Drake Software® and TaxAct®. These two longstanding organizations offer customers professional and do-it-yourself digital and downloadable products that are easy-to-use, best-in-class technology, and provide unparalleled customer support. Taxwell brands are a trusted solution for all users including those with complex tax returns. We strive to attract and retain candidates who exemplify our values: performance, perseverance, progress and partnership. Taxwell is an organization of forward thinkers looking to add industry experts to our growing team. We’re looking for a Software Engineer II to join our TaxAct Pro Desktop team, building the software that professional tax preparers rely on to serve their clients with speed and accuracy each season. This role focuses on maintaining and evolving our flagship native Windows desktop application—critical software that requires precision, reliability, and thoughtful engineering. This is an ideal role for engineers who have strong fundamentals and want to go deeper into the internals of a mature codebase, into performance-sensitive debugging, and into the kind of platform-level decisions that keep complex systems healthy. You’ll work in both C++ and C#, collaborating with experienced engineers to design, implement, and improve new and existing features across the app and its supporting services. We value engineers who are curious, thorough, and proactive people who not only implement solutions, but take time to understand why the system works the way it does and how to make it better. You’ll also be expected to integrate AI-assisted tools like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude Code to improve your velocity while upholding high-quality engineering practices. What You’ll Do Develop new features and enhancements across our native Windows desktop application using C++ Design and maintain supporting services and APIs written in C# Debug and resolve production issues, often in performance-sensitive, multi-threaded environments Refactor complex or aging code to improve maintainability and testability Write testable, production-grade code, leveraging AI tools when appropriate to accelerate development, explore options, or improve documentation. Contribute to maintainability not just in your own work, but in how the system fits together overall Collaborate with QA, product managers, and fellow engineers to design and deliver reliable, supportable software Build deep understanding of the Pro domain, the application architecture, and our codebase to contribute thoughtfully, challenge assumptions, propose improvements, and grow your design instincts over time Participate in design and code reviews, offering and receiving constructive feedback Begin mentoring junior engineers or interns through pairing, documentation, and context sharing What Sets You Up for Success 3–5 years of professional experience as a software engineer Proficiency in C++ (including familiarity with MFC or other Windows desktop UI frameworks) Experience with C#, .NET, and Visual Studio tooling Familiarity with debugging tools, performance profiling, and diagnosing memory or threading issues Comfortable working in large, mature codebases with evolving architecture Familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar) A proactive mindset. You seek out context, ask the right questions, and look for opportunities to improve not just your own work, but how the team builds and maintains the system as a whole Curiosity about how systems fit together. You’re eager to learn from design reviews, evaluate tradeoffs, and understand why things work the way they do Bonus Skills Experience with AWS (preferred), or other cloud platforms such as Azure or GCP Experience improving or enabling unit testing and automated testing in legacy systems Experience working in Agile or Scrum-based teams Experience in highly regulated domains (e.g., tax, fintech, healthcare) Exposure to front-end frameworks such as Angular or Vue Why This Role Matters The TaxAct Pro desktop application is critical to the success of professional tax preparers across the country. Our team maintains and evolves this platform to meet ever-changing tax regulations, modernize legacy code, and improve performance and reliability. As a Software Engineer II, you’ll play a key role in making that happen by delivering high-quality features, refactoring responsibly, and growing into deeper ownership with support from staff engineers and peers. You’ll join a collaborative, high-trust team that values deep technical thinking, thoughtful implementation, and a commitment to building durable, maintainable At Taxwell, we believe our work benefits from the diverse perspectives of our employees.
