We’re looking for a Director of Software Engineering to lead two critical teams at the heart of Taxwell’s business: our flagship Desktop platform and our growing Practice Management suite (DrakePay, Portals, and related web tools). Together these groups represent both the systems that power our business today and the platforms that will carry us into the future. You’ll oversee ~15 engineers, including two managers, and will be responsible for ensuring high-quality delivery, strong engineering practices, and steady growth of the team. This is a high-impact leadership position with room to expand scope over time—ideal for someone who can balance legacy systems with new technology, drive modernization, and build a healthy engineering culture. Responsibilities: Team & People Leadership Lead and support two engineering managers and their teams (~15 engineers). Assess, develop, and strengthen the team—creating growth opportunities for high performers while addressing gaps in accountability and execution. Mentor managers and senior ICs to help them grow in leadership, ownership, and technical depth. Foster a culture of clarity, accountability, and inclusion, grounded in technical excellence. Technical & Product Strategy Provide trusted technical leadership across both legacy desktop systems (PowerBasic, .NET) and modern web platforms (Angular, .NET). Partner with Product, Design, and business leaders to define roadmaps for both existing revenue-critical systems and emerging SaaS offerings. Guide architectural decisions that balance modernization with reliability. Encourage thoughtful adoption of AI-powered tools where they improve developer productivity, quality, or confidence. Execution & Delivery Own the delivery of high-impact features and platform improvements with predictable execution and high quality. Establish and improve practices around planning, estimation, testing, deployment, and monitoring. Proactively identify and resolve risks, bottlenecks, and technical debt. Drive continuous improvement and establish clear visibility into engineering health. Cross-Functional Influence Act as a senior partner to executive leadership by bringing engineering perspective into strategic decisions. Collaborate across engineering teams to promote alignment, shared standards, and platform consistency. Contribute to broader organizational initiatives around platform modernization, developer productivity, and scaling team structures. Qualifications: Experience 12+ years in software engineering, including 8+ years in engineering leadership with 3+ years managing managers. Proven success leading engineering teams that deliver B2B or SaaS products. Experience managing across both legacy systems and modern platforms. Track record of scaling teams and platforms in high-growth or mid-sized environments. Technical Acumen Strong technical background in .NET and C#. Experience with legacy desktop systems (e.g., PowerBasic) and willingness to engage deeply in them. Familiarity with modern web frameworks (e.g., Angular, .NET). Strong understanding of architecture, enterprise integrations, and SaaS operations. Skilled in CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and secure development practices. Leadership & Communication Strong people leader with the ability to coach, mentor, and grow managers and ICs. Clear, compelling communicator who can bridge technical and business perspectives. Strategic thinker with the judgment to balance long-term vision with near-term delivery. Bonus Points Experience in tax, fintech, or other highly regulated industries. Background in modernizing legacy systems or leading technical Transformation. Passion for improving developer experience and engineering culture.
