The Senior Manager of Executive Initiatives serves as a strategic partner to the CEO and a primary liaison to the Board of Directors. This role ensures the CEO’s time, priorities, and communications are aligned with organizational strategy, and that the Board receives the information and coordination needed to govern effectively. The Senior Manager leads cross-organizational planning, manages high-stakes executive communications, and drives strategic initiatives that originate from or require close collaboration with the Office of the CEO. This is a high-visibility role requiring exceptional judgment, political acumen, discretion, and the ability to operate seamlessly across executive leadership, staff, external partners, and national stakeholders. Position Duties and Key Responsibilities: Manage and optimize the CEO’s calendar, schedule, travel, and briefing workflow to ensure alignment with strategic priorities. Serve as a thought partner to the CEO on meeting preparation, follow-up, and decision-making needs. Prepare or oversee development of briefings, talking points, background memos, slide decks, and pre-reads for internal and external engagements. Track commitments, deadlines, and follow-up actions, ensuring the CEO’s office drives work forward across the organization. Safeguard the CEO’s time by evaluating requests, prioritizing opportunities, and ensuring strong internal coordination. Board of Directors Governance & Coordination Serve as primary staff liaison to the Board of Directors and Board Chair. Lead planning, logistics, and materials development for all Board and committee meetings, retreats, and special sessions. Draft and manage agendas, minutes, briefing documents, resolutions, dashboards, and governance materials. Support recruitment, onboarding, and engagement of Board members. Ensure alignment between Board governance, CEO priorities, and organizational strategy. Organizational Coordination Work closely with the CEO’s direct reports to ensure follow-through on commitments, alignment on organizational goals, and effective internal communication. Support the Executive Office’s planning and coordination of key organizational meetings, including all-staff meetings, leadership retreats, and major events. Coordinate internal communication from the CEO, including staff updates, memos, and executive messages that build transparency and engagement. Provide logistical support for internal and external engagements that include the CEO, such as conferences, site visits, and funder meetings. Executive Communications Draft high-quality executive communications, including speeches, op-eds, statements, newsletters, talking points, and funder-facing materials. Partner with Communications and Policy teams to ensure messaging is consistent, timely, and reflective of organizational voice. Manage sensitive or high-stakes communications on behalf of the CEO and Board. Strategic Initiatives & Cross-Organizational Coordination Lead or support high-priority initiatives that cut across program, operations, policy, and development functions. Facilitate executive-level project planning, internal alignment, and decision-making processes. Track progress on organizational priorities, ensuring follow-through and accountability. Conduct research and synthesize complex information to inform executive decision-making. Operational Excellence & Systems Management Strengthen systems, templates, and processes for executive workflow, governance, and cross-team coordination. Manage confidential information with the highest degree of professionalism and discretion. Support special projects and represent the CEO’s Office on internal and external working groups, as needed. Requirements Qualifications & Skills: Required Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in public administration, business, policy, communications, or a related field. 7–10+ years of experience in executive support, project management, strategic initiatives, or governance roles— preferably in a national nonprofit, public agency, or mission-driven organization. Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills; ability to produce clear, concise, and compelling materials under tight deadlines. Demonstrated experience managing Board relations or senior-level governance processes. Strong strategic thinking, judgment, and ability to synthesize complex issues. Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, navigate ambiguity, and anticipate needs. High emotional intelligence, diplomacy, and discretion. Preferred Experience supporting a CEO or C-suite leader in a multifaceted organization. Familiarity with nonprofit governance, public policy, or national networks. Project management certification or training. Experience with CRM, project management, and workflow tools (e.g., HubSpot, Asana, Monday.com, Salesforce). Salary Information: The salary range reflected in this job posting is the hiring range for this position within the Washington DC Metropolitan area. Please note that a geographic differential will be applied to the salary for candidates hired from regions with a lower cost of living.
