On a regular basis you will Take ownership of Steno’s analytics data model, which includes Designing and building dbt data models that serve both traditional batch and real-time analytics needs Implementing dbt tests to ensure high data quality throughout our data models Creating custom ingestion pipelines for nonstandard data sources leveraging external APIs Collaborate with Data Analysts and business stakeholders to understand data requirements across business units Assist Data Analysts and business stakeholders in learning how to properly use the data models you create Build and refine data engineering processes and best practices based on project experiences Optimize Snowflake queries and warehouse performance for cost efficiency Stay informed about the latest trends within the modern data space and explore ways to leverage those trends to continuously improve our data stack Serve as a mentor to other Analytics Engineers and Data Analysts Establish and document data/analytics engineering standards and best practices across the organization You’re gonna crush it if You love solving problems and collaborating with others to solve those problems You've become familiar with the downsides of both under-engineering and over-engineering and developed an appreciation for working pragmatically You seek clarity, and as much simplicity as the underlying problem domain will allow You are well organized, able to manage time effectively, and comfortable working through sometimes incomplete designs and product specs You're enthusiastic about defining and cultivating a data-driven company culture that instills a spirit of continuous improvement in analytics capabilities and data literacy across all departments and functions. You are humble and recognize no one or system is perfect, and you see mistakes being made as an opportunity for improvement You are not easily flustered if someone takes a different approach to solving the same problem You are bothered by seeing the same business logic in SQL copy and pasted You enjoy optimizing queries and the underlying data model to drive performance increases You have strong technical leadership abilities and enjoy mentoring and guiding others You can think strategically about data architecture and make decisions that balance immediate needs with long-term platform goals You're skilled at cross-functional collaboration and can influence technical decisions across teams Some requirements You have advanced experience with dbt Core, git, Snowflake, and other common tools found within the modern data stack, including complex macros, packages, and CI/CD pipelines You have 5+ years of experience with writing SQL queries in an analytical environment At least 4-7 years of analytics engineering or data engineering experience You have experience creating data models adhering to data warehouse design patterns and dimensional modeling You have a demonstrated track record of delivering well-engineered data solutions with modern technologies You are effective at communicating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders Bonus points if you have worked in one or more early-stage startups!
