As the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) Chief Structure Design Engineer, you will direct the assignment of bridge and structure design projects to the in-house bridge design squads and consultants, closely coordinating with other departmental staff responsible for producing and monitoring road and bridge plans and projects meeting scheduled deadlines. You will oversee multiple in-house bridge design squads and consultants to deliver engineering plans and contract documents for highway, railroad and pedestrian bridges, large span culverts, and ancillary structures. You’ll coordinate closely across MDOT to keep road and bridge programs synchronized and on schedule. You will also administer the development and implementation of performance measures, risk assessment and Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) programs. This position exercises considerable judgement in the development and implementation of bridge and structure design-related policies and standards and serves on the Statewide Design Alignment Team, Innovative Contracting Committee, and Statewide Bridge Committee. What you’ll do: • Lead and allocate resources across in-house bridge design squads and consultants to deliver bridge/structure plans and contract documents statewide, ensuring alignment with region program goals. • Supervise Bridge Unit Leaders and manage team performance (expectations, evaluations, feedback, corrective actions), staffing and hiring, labor relations activities, and timesheet approvals in compliance with Civil Service rules and union contracts. • Drive project management excellence: Ensure accountability (e.g., Planisware), performance measures, risk assessments and the Structure Design Section’s QC/QA program, including program-level QA per the MDOT Bridge Design Manual, and report status quarterly to Bureau of Bridges and Structures (BOBS) leadership. • Provide technical leadership on advanced methodologies (accelerated bridge construction, prefabrictaed bridge elements and systems), 3-D modeling and element standardization; update MDOT bridge design guides/manuals; and advise leadership on design policy. • Represent the Structure Design Section on statewide committees, including the Statewide Design Alignment Team, Innovative Contracting Committee, Statewide Bridge Committee and MDOT/ACEC Bridge Committee to align policies and practices. • Prequalify consultants for bridge categories. • Advance bridge technology tools by guiding software development teams and training for design/analysis tools across the section. Education Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering. Possession of a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering preferred.
