THE POSITION The State of Connecticut , Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is now hiring for a Medical Records Specialist 1 to join their team! HIGHLIGHTS • FACILITY: Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH) • UNIT: Woodward Hall/Health Information Management/Medical Records Department • ADDRESS: 1000 Silver Street, Middletown, CT • SCHEDULE: Full-Time, 40 Hours per Week, First Shift, 8:00am - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday • POSITION NUMBER: 104605 What We Can Offer You • Visit our new State Employee Benefits Overview page! • Professional growth and development opportunities • A healthy work/life balance to all employees Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To • Assist in maintaining a file of medical records such as daily admissions and discharges, results of diagnostic tests (labs), signed releases of information (ROI); • Maintain the required Order of the Medical Record; • Discharge Chart processing and breakdown for filing; • Daily paper filings in client medical record, chart thinning, chart auditing and reporting daily in Excel; • Ordering of unit and area supplies; • Administrative duties such as making copies of reports, faxing, scanning; • Inspects reports and records for omissions and errors such as date, time and signatures for chart completion/compliance • Working in a face paced healthcare environment of clients with psychiatric disability. About Us DMHAS is a health care agency whose mission is to promote the overall health and wellness of persons with behavioral health needs through an integrated network of holistic, comprehensive, effective, and efficient services and supports that foster dignity, respect, and self-sufficiency in those we serve. CVH opened in 1868 as the State’s public hospital for the treatment of persons with mental illness. Today , CVH is the largest of DMHAS facilities, and includes 17 inpatient units over two campuses (Middletown and Hartford). The hospital includes both a general psychiatry and addiction services units. CVH provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care and substance abuse treatment, including treatment for pregnant women and persons with dual diagnoses. Specialty areas include geriatric and special services, an integrated network of comprehensive mental health services for older adults and young adult services. The facility also runs the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) program which addresses the needs of TBI survivors, including reintegration into community living, independent living skills development, vocational and educational training, psychiatric, cognitive and neurological assessment and treatment, speech and physical rehabilitation as well as individual and family counseling. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In a state medical institution or facility medical records department this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks associated with maintaining medical records and medical records coding activities. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES • Assists in maintaining a file of medical records such as daily admissions and discharges, daily census, case histories, results of diagnostic tests, signed releases of information, medical summaries and abstracts; • Inspects reports and records for omissions and errors; • Codes and files a full range of diagnoses according to anatomical systems and in conformance with accepted international classification systems (i.e. ICD, WHO, DSM3, DRG, etc.); • Prepares statistical reports on such matters as classification of disease, laboratory, dental, X-ray and physiotherapy activities; • Prepares death certificates, burial permits and other related records; • Prepares reports to state and federal agencies as required; • May attend probate court hearings and give testimony; • Performs related duties as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY • Knowledge of • basic medical terminology and human anatomy; • medical coding principles and techniques with particular emphasis on International Classification of Disease Adopted procedures; • principles of statistical data tabulation; • office systems and procedures; • Skills • interpersonal skills; • oral and written communication skills. Minimum Qualifications - General Experience Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance of medical records and preparation of statistical reports. Preferred Qualifications • Experience working in a psychiatric or special needs hospital/environment • Experience working with paper medical records • Experience working in a fast paced environment with clinical staff as support Special Requirements Persons having responsibility for supervising or observing the behavior of inmates or custodial clients will be required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification by the time of permanent appointment.
