Under the general direction of the Information Technology Manager II, the Information Technology Specialist II (ITS II), Security Engineer, is responsible for providing expert-level technical knowledge, support, and administration for the California Military Department (CMD) State Network security operations. The ITS II serves in a lead capacity on complex security projects, system feasibility studies, design, and implementation efforts. The incumbent provides general IT expertise to technical staff and consultants who manage, support, maintain, secure, and optimize the CMD State security infrastructure. Key responsibilities include enhancing the Department's security capabilities; establishing and maintaining security standards aligned with industry best practices; and developing strategies and policies that impact the entire organization. The ITS II collaborates with others to research, evaluate, and test network security technologies and enhancements, offering guidance and recommendations. They demonstrate advanced knowledge of current industry standards, security regulations, and best practices. Additional duties include developing training materials, plans, procedures, and manuals for users and technical staff; conducting training sessions on security technologies and topics; leading technical discussions that increase staff awareness of CMD security policies and procedures; and facilitate knowledge transfer to management and technical staff regarding deployed security technologies.
