Director, Policy and Advocacy 12-month Temporary Position (2026)* • Renewal based on need and funding availability beyond 2026 Summary Social Good Solutions (SGS) is a Black woman-owned and majority-operated boutique consulting firm that works with philanthropic institutions, nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and institutions of higher education to design, operationalize and manage racial justice initiatives from concept to implementation. Our core values are grounded in dignity and justice for all, community-centered solutions, and excellence at every turn. Using a participatory framework and co-design approach, we support our clients in their journey to operationalize racial equity and social justice in organizational culture and in programs, services and strategies. Our work is organized across four main portfolios: Initiative Management, Organizational Culture Transformation, Strategic Advising, and Special Projects. Project Overview & Goal The Director, Policy and Advocacy position advances the work of the Black Equity Collective (BEC), an effort founded and hosted by Social Good Solutions, as part of the firm’s Initiative Management portfolio, representing our efforts to support the long-term sustainability of Black-led organizations and advance a long-term vision for Black permanency in California. BEC is deepening its political infrastructure to engage its network of 65 organizations in important power-building and civic engagement efforts in 2026; and to advance a unique set of priorities aligned with BEC’s vision for Black Permanency in California. The Director, Policy and Advocacy will play a critical role in providing thought leadership to advance BEC’s policy priorities, strategy development to ensure BEC’s member organizations are equipped to participate in civic engagement efforts, and coalition-building capacity to reinforce BEC’s credibility as a core partner in collaborative spaces. This role requires a strategist who can think big and tactically execute while deftly navigating the relational layers of community, institutional, and philanthropic partnerships. The position is ideal for someone with a strong track record of working to advance systems change for Black populations through both policy development and coalition building. He/she/they must have excellent planning, project management, communication, organizational and time management skills as well as technical acumen and a high degree of emotional intelligence. The Policy Advocacy Director will supervise the Senior Leader of Policy & Advocacy and work under the direction of the Managing Director, Programs & Operations to enhance BEC’s advocacy efforts through network engagement, policy analysis, coalition building, and legislative mapping. Policy Director Scope of Work: Policy Strategy & Government Relations • Lead and refine BEC’s policy strategy and develop and manage a comprehensive policy roadmap covering BEC’s priorities; and define clear policy goals and milestones; report progress regularly to leadership. • Develop strategy and timeline to draft policy briefs, white papers, fact sheets, written testimony, amendments, and comment letters on legislative proposals. • Develop a legislative engagement strategy targeting key legislative representatives, and identify prospective policy proposals and legislators to author/co-author proposals, and identify supporters. • Monitor emerging legislative proposals aligned with BEC’s priorities and work with BEC’s coalition partner, Alliance for Reparations, Reconciliation & Truth • Ensure California policy strategies are informed by and responsive to the BEC network and Black communities. Coalition & Network Engagement • Support BEC’s core partner role in the Alliance for Reparations, Reconciliation and Truth (ARRT) coalition, a multi-racial, multi-sector alliance advancing reparations in California (co-convened by the CA Black Power Network and the Equal Justice Society) and the Black Power Building ecosystem, a group of five regional and statewide networks collaborating to advance a collective vision of Black permanence in CA. • Build collaborative relationships to influence public policy and amplify organizational impact. • Maintain strong relationships with grantees and partners, ensuring alignment between advocacy campaign. • Curate and coordinate a unique set of civic engagement and power-building activities to activate BEC’s diverse network of Black-led service providers, cultural curators, and advocacy and systems change-focused CBOs in 2026. Strategic Communications • Collaborate with team members to develop targeted messaging for policymakers, partners, media, and the public. • Serve as organizational spokesperson and policy expert for media and communications efforts. • Educate the public about the BEC’s mission and policy priorities. Supervision • Supervise the Senior Leader, Policy & Advocacy, who focuses on managing ladders of engagement with the network of BEC members, ranging from the steering committee to network-wide collective action. • Support the Senior Leader in executing strategic decisions at the network level and with coalition partners. Key Deliverables & Success Factors • Produce a comprehensive policy roadmap and framework covering BEC’s priorities, considering the broader policy landscape, campaigns underway, and key stakeholders/partners driving that work, to clearly define BEC’s policy advocacy goals, priorities, and milestones over time. • Curate and coordinate a unique set of civic engagement and power-building activities to activate BEC’s diverse network of Black-led service providers, cultural curators, and advocacy and systems change-focused CBOs in 2026. • Develop a strategy to operationalize ongoing civic engagement in key regions across LA County and in collaboration with the Black Power Building ecosystem for leverage and coordination. Qualifications: SGS works with a high degree of professionalism and community care. As such, all team members are expected to represent SGS with integrity and excellence. The ability to plan ahead, anticipate needs, document decisions, build trust and camaraderie with peers and elders, and perform responsibilities with limited oversight are all essential skills. The ideal candidate will possess the following professional and personal abilities, attributes and experiences: Position-Related Skills: • 10-15 years of experience in policy advocacy, analysis, and related fields with a Bachelor's Degree. • Strong understanding of key policy issues impacting Black communities, particularly in areas such as reparations, healthcare, housing, education, justice reform, and workforce. • Experience leading coalitions and working with grassroots organizations in the policy space. • Familiarity with state and local legislative processes and how they intersect with issues impacting the Black community in policy advocacy. • Experience with tracking and analyzing legislation, policy proposals and their potential impact on BEC’s priority communities • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex policy issues in a clear and accessible way. • Experience in preparing and presenting policy briefings, reports, and other advocacy materials. • Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including senior leadership, coalition partners, community groups, and policymakers. • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively. • Experience in planning, preparing for and implementing large-scale advocacy events or regional tours. • A deep commitment to racial equity and social justice, with a demonstrated understanding of the challenges facing Black communities. • The ability to work effectively in multiracial spaces to build bridges and represent the unique needs and experiences of BEC’s member organizations. • Familiarity with or lived experience in communities impacted by systemic inequities. • Technical command of Google Suite, Microsoft Suite, Zoom, Canva, online meeting and project management tools; comfortability with exploring and incorporating new technologies. • Facilitation experience is a plus • Cultural intelligence, evidenced by a shared lived experience and background living and/or working in communities served by the Black Equity Collective. . • Open to learning, developing, feedback, and continuous improvement. • Track record of having a deep commitment to racial equity and social justice. • Some travel required across LA County and the Inland Empire, as well as to Sacramento. • Ability to self-manage in a virtual environment; manage time effectively and be responsive to various forms of communication. • An exceptionally high work ethic with a sense of pride in one’s work. This is a 12-month full-time temporary position with a starting salary of $120,000 plus eligible benefits. Social Good Solutions is a remote work environment with regularly scheduled, mandatory in-person meetings.
