Full Description

The Part-Time Development Director will lead and coordinate the Foundation’s contributed-revenue strategy, with a primary focus on individual giving, local philanthropy, and institutional relationships. This role is ideal for an experienced development professional who prefers a flexible schedule, values conservation and the performing arts, and enjoys building systems as much as cultivating relationships. This is not an entry-level role. We are looking for someone who can operate independently without staff, exercise sound judgment, and serve as a strategic partner to leadership. Key Responsibilities Development Strategy & Planning • Develop and execute an annual development plan aligned with organizational priorities and capacity • Establish realistic revenue targets across individual, foundation, and institutional sources • Create clear systems for tracking prospects, deadlines, and stewardship Individual & Major Gifts • Lead cultivation and stewardship of individual donors, with a focus on local and regional supporters • Support leadership in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects • Help design donor engagement strategies, events, and communications that feel authentic and mission-aligned Institutional Giving & Grants (Oversight Role) • Coordinate the Foundation’s foundation and institutional giving strategy • Partner closely with program leadership on grant framing, compliance, and reporting • Manage grant calendars, submissions, and stewardship without compromising program integrity • Ensure grants are program-led, accurate, and compliant (Note: This role may oversee grantwriting but is not expected to personally write grant applications.) Systems, Operations & Stewardship • Maintain donor records and reporting systems (CRM experience preferred) • Ensure timely acknowledgements, reporting, and funder communications • Help establish development policies, procedures, and best practices appropriate for a growing organization Desired Qualifications • 8+ years of nonprofit development experience, including major gifts and/or institutional giving • Existing network within the communities of Lafayette, Orinda, Moraga, Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco strongly preferred • Demonstrated success building or managing contributed-revenue programs • Ability to work independently with a small staff and finite resources • Strong understanding of the distinctions between individual fundraising and grant-based funding • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • High level of discretion, judgment, and professionalism • Comfort working in a small, entrepreneurial organization • Experience with environmental, conservation, or performing arts organizations strongly preferred Working Style & Values Fit The ideal candidate: • Values mission integrity • Is pragmatic, organized, and low-ego • Loves live music Compensation & Structure This is a part-time, contractor or fractional role at the outset, with flexible hours. The Foundation anticipates evolving this position into a part-time employee role with full benefits as the organization grows and as the development function demonstrates traction and long-term fit. Compensation will be structured as an hourly rate or monthly retainer initially, based on experience and scope, with the potential to transition to a benefited position over time.
