Overview of SANDAG SANDAG is committed to improving the quality of life for the San Diego region and is responsible for developing and implementing a Regional Plan that looks out to the year 2050. The Regional Plan is based upon better connecting transportation and land use, preserving the environment, providing transportation options, addressing climate change, social equity, public health, affordable housing, economic prosperity and other issues that impact quality of life in the region. SANDAG is currently working on an update to the 2025 Regional Plan that envisions the region's transportation system. The vision is based upon data and analytics, the latest technologies with a focus on resiliency. SANDAG not only develops the transportation vision but also turns it into reality buy building and constructing the projects listed in the regional plan and SANDAG annual fiscal year budget. Overview of the Engineering and Construction Department Within the Program Project Management (PPM) and Engineering and Construction (E&C) Departments, there are four teams that are seeking assistance of an intern: Project Management, Construction, Design Management, and Office Engineering teams. The interns selected for these positions will have an opportunity to work in this discipline while gaining exposure to many other aspects of project delivery and transportation engineering in the San Diego Region. The PPM and E&C departments are seeking a candidate who is passionate about developing multi-modal infrastructure projects while promoting safety and equity in order to foster real change in the San Diego region. Our goal is to have someone on the team who is passionate about their work and likes to see visions of a better transportation future turn into reality. Overview of the Project Management Team The Project Management Team is comprised of project managers that manage the project scope, schedule, and budget for bikeway, railway, and transportation facilities in the San Diego Region from preliminary engineering assessments thru final design, construction, and closeout. Project managers lead the project delivery effort and work closely with project stakeholders, communities, the Board of Directors and internal engineering design managers and construction managers to successfully deliver projects that support regional transit and active mobility transportation in the San Diego Region. Overview of the Design Management Team The Design Team manages all aspects of design development, right of way acquisition, and utility relocation management from preliminary engineering assessments, thru final design and construction, and closeout of bikeway, railway, and transportation facilities that support regional transit and active mobility transportation in the San Diego Region. Overview of the Construction Team The SANDAG Construction Team oversees the administration and management of construction for bikeway projects, the LOSSAN Corridor, light rail extensions and other capital improvement projects. The team supports design and project managers through constructability reviews and coordination of project activities to ensure the successful delivery of construction projects. Responsibilities include ensuring environmental compliance, quality assurance, tracking project schedules and budgets, and resolving on-site construction and contract issues. Overview of the Office Engineering Team The Office Engineering Team manages all aspects of standards development including design criteria, standard special provisions, standard plans, estimating guides, manuals, and internal procedures and process development to support the delivery of SANDAG Capital program that constructs bikeway, railway, and transportation facilities that support regional transit and active mobility transportation in the San Diego Region. Job Responsibilities • Contribute as a team member to the delivery of various projects; participate in meetings and liaise with project partners; assist with coordinating activities. • Provide support for project delivery working groups, meetings, and public outreach; record and summarize minutes and actions for distribution to committees, working groups, and the public; assist with specific follow-up requests that arise from meetings. • Assist with the review and verification of consultant and grantee invoices. • Prepare tables, charts, and diagrams to display information for written reports and presentations. • Contribute to the preparation of various types of reports, summaries, correspondence, and presentations; develop and maintain content for web and social media. • Participate and assist with project-related events. Typical Qualifications • Graduate and/or undergraduate level coursework in engineering or construction management, or a related field. • Demonstrated ability to learn and apply engineering principles and leadership skills working on projects for classes, clubs, or other professional or social organizations. • Ability to complete assignments that involve researching, analyzing, and synthesizing information into written summaries, reports, or recommendations. • Proficient Microsoft Office skills, including MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Internet research. • Ability to communicate with various audiences using exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills; Spanish language or multi-lingual skills are a plus. • Flexibility and willingness to perform a variety of tasks typical of an entry-level engineering position. Salary Range: Full Pay Range is $16.49 - $23.92/hour Pursuing Undergraduate Degree: $20.00/hour Bachelor's degree or higher: $23.00/hour. One-year opportunity working 19-29 hours per week, Monday - Friday during regular business hours.
