About the role: Samsara’s Firmware Quality Engineering (FQE) team ensures that the firmware powering millions of IoT devices is robust, reliable, and customer-ready. We’re looking for a hands-on technical leader to manage and grow our firmware quality efforts. This manager will drive test strategy, automation, and validation for embedded systems across Samsara’s product lines. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in embedded testing, automation frameworks, and hardware–software validation. They will lead a small team of engineers, fostering technical excellence and building scalable quality processes that ensure Samsara’s devices deliver world-class reliability and performance. This role will require close collaboration with cross-functional partners in firmware development, hardware engineering, product management, and manufacturing. This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US. In this role, you will: Lead and grow the Firmware Quality Engineering team, fostering a culture of technical rigor, inclusion, and continuous improvement. Define and drive quality strategies for firmware testing across Samsara’s IoT product lines. Develop and maintain automation frameworks for embedded devices, including simulation, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), and system validation setups. Establish and expand test coverage for critical firmware features such as connectivity, over-the-air (OTA) updates, device security, and power management. Integrate automated firmware tests into CI/CD pipelines to accelerate release velocity while maintaining high quality. Partner closely with Firmware Engineering, Hardware, and Product teams to ensure quality is built in from design through release. Hire, develop and lead an inclusive, engaged, and high performing team. Minimum requirements for the role: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. 7+ years of experience in embedded systems or firmware testing, including test automation and hardware–software validation. 2+ years of experience managing engineers, including hiring, coaching, and performance management. Strong hands-on experience with embedded test frameworks, hardware-in-the-loop setups, and device validation. Proficiency in one or more programming/scripting languages (Python, C/C++, Java, etc.) for test automation. Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills, with the ability to drive root cause analysis. Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills. An ideal candidate also has: Experience with large-scale IoT deployments and device fleets. Familiarity with wireless technologies (BLE, Wi-Fi, LTE, GPS) and their testing. Background in reliability testing, field validation, or manufacturing test processes. Track record of delivering customer-facing hardware/software products. Experience leading geographically distributed teams. Samsara’s Compensation Philosophy: Samsara’s compensation program is designed to deliver Total Direct Compensation (based on role, level, and geography) that is at or above market. We do this through our base salary + bonus/variable + restricted stock unit awards (RSUs) for eligible roles. For eligible roles, a new hire RSU award may be awarded at the time of hire, and additional RSU refresh grants may be awarded annually. We pay for performance, and top performers in eligible roles may receive above-market equity refresh awards which allow employees to achieve higher market. The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is below.
