Architect and evolve systems that operate real-world infrastructure, guide technical direction, review code, support client engagements, and incorporate data and ML into operational systems.
Extensive experience with large-scale, production-grade systems, proficiency in architecture and implementation, mentoring skills, and familiarity with data/ML integration in operational contexts.
About S44 Energy S44 Energy designs and builds software that powers real EV charging networks. Our systems run in production across commercial, fleet, and public charging environments where uptime, reliability, and operational insight matter. We are deeply committed to open standards and open-source technologies and actively contribute to and build upon them in our platforms and client solutions. We are the creators of CitrineOS, an open-source charging management system foundation, and TopazEV, a commercial charging operations platform built on top of it. Our software interacts with hardware, utilities, payments, and customers — not just APIs. This is infrastructure software that operates in the real world. Why this role exists We are no longer in the “build a product” phase. Our software powers charging networks that people depend on daily. Chargers fail in parking garages at midnight. Fleets depend on uptime. Utilities depend on telemetry. Clients depend on operational insight — not just dashboards. We are looking for the engineer who helps us evolve from a capable platform into an operationally intelligent one. This role will: • shape system architecture across multiple real-world deployments • guide technical direction across both product development and client implementations • Incorporate data and ML into operational decision-making • help engineering and business land on solutions that work outside a whiteboard You won’t just write features. You will influence how infrastructure software actually behaves in the physical world. What You Will Do • Architect and evolve systems that operate real-world infrastructure across both product development and client-facing deployments • Review and guide code across engineers at all experience levels • Pair with engineers to solve complex implementation challenges • Support client engagements alongside the engineering team when technical tradeoffs matter and help translate requirements into durable solutions • Decide when to build, when to adapt, and when to say no • Incorporate data, analytics, and ML where it improves reliability and operations • Translate business needs into technical approaches engineers respect • Help grow engineers into senior and staff-level decision makers while ensuring solutions work in both product and client delivery environments This is a hands-on engineering role. You will spend meaningful time in code. What Success Looks Like (12 Months) • Engineers seek your input on difficult design decisions • Product and business trust your technical judgment • Clients value your guidance on architecture and implementation • The platform has clearer architectural direction and fewer recurring operational issues • Data begins informing operational behavior, not just monitoring What We’re Looking For You likely: • Have operated large or complex production systems and understand their failure modes • Are comfortable moving between architecture and implementation • Lead through technical judgment rather than title • Enjoy mentoring without becoming a people manager • Have worked on products used by real customers • Can balance ideal engineering with practical delivery • Are comfortable using data and, increasingly, ML to improve system behavior (not just reporting) Bonus experience: • Distributed systems or device communication • Cloud infrastructure and observability • API-first platforms • Hardware-software integration environments • Energy, mobility, payments, or operational platforms We value thoughtful engineers over fast engineers. Correct decisions matter more than quick ones. What You’ll Get • A small but established team where your decisions matter • Direct collaboration with leadership and clients • Real systems with real operational impact • The ability to shape technical direction without moving into management We are not a startup experiment — but we are still small enough that one strong engineer materially changes the trajectory of the company. If you want to shape a real system used in the real world, this role will likely be more satisfying than a larger organization. Provide a cover letter and resume with your application
