THE POSITION The Research Manager will support RAN's Climate & Energy (C&E) Program's strategies to shift finance away from fossil fuels and advance climate justice by leading impactful research and analysis to stop financial institutions' support for fossil fuel expansion and to bring about a just energy transition and respect for human rights. This position is responsible for working closely with colleagues within RAN and with external partners to manage the production of strategic and compelling research, in line with organizational and program's strategic goals. The Research Manager will lead the annual Banking on Climate Chaos research project which tracks fossil finance flows from banks and oversee the development of other research products. They will also be responsible for managing research coalitions and partnerships, coordinating with colleagues at RAN and global partners to produce relevant analysis that leverages RAN's research to support campaigning and advocacy goals, and supervising the Senior Research Strategist and other research staff or consultants as appropriate. The Research Manager reports to the C&E Program Director. The ideal candidate will have excellent research, analytical and writing skills as well as experience managing complex projects and working with a range of partners on climate justice, environmental protection and/or corporate campaigning. They will be a strategic thinker who enjoys interacting with a range of people whether inside RAN, global civil society partners or in corporate meeting rooms, with a deep commitment to climate justice. RESPONSIBILITIES • Lead the development, planning, and execution of research projects within the C&E program, including coordinating qualitative and quantitative research, publication writing, editing, consultation, design coordination, production, and launch activities. • Manage research partnerships and coalitions, including leading research collaboration on joint publications. • Manage the annual Banking on Climate Chaos research project, coordinating working groups, managing report production, timelines and budgets. • Supervise the Senior Research Strategist, who oversees data production on the Banking on Climate Chaos report • Manage and mentor the Senior Research Strategist and other research staff • Develop research products including briefings, blogs, internal memos and other products that support C&E program priorities on issues related to fossil fuels, the energy transition, the LNG sector, and the banking and insurance industries. • Oversee and guide the work of internal researchers, consultants, and contractors to ensure timely, high-quality outputs. • Establish and manage processes that enhance data integrity, consistency, and usability across research projects. Ensure RAN's research meets rigorous standards for credibility, impact, and accuracy. • Review and provide feedback on all major research deliverables including reports, briefings, blogs, memos, and presentations. • Maintain current knowledge of financial platforms like Bloomberg and other financial data providers. • Promote the use of RAN's research tools as trusted sources of fossil fuel finance data for campaigners, investors, and policymakers. • Monitor financial industry trends and energy financing trends , identify emerging issues, data gaps, and learning opportunities to maintain RAN's leadership in energy finance research. • Represent RAN's research externally, including media and speaking engagements and stakeholder meetings with banks, investors, regulators, and other key audiences. • Contribute to strategic planning and assess research impact, while supporting tracking of research-related budgets and organizational planning cycles. • Collaborate with communications, digital, and development teams to produce compelling materials and contribute to grant proposals. QUALIFICATIONS • Minimum 5 years experience in quantitative and qualitative research including data analysis skills, proficiency in using basic software tools to analyze data (Excel, Google Sheets etc.), and experience in analyzing large datasets, and experience applying research findings to inform advocacy and campaign contexts (e.g., ability to develop and shape analysis in a way that serves campaign goals and target audiences). • Previous campaigning experience in environmental justice and/or human rights (or similar) is preferred. • Minimum of 2 years supervising staff and/or managing a team. • Strong knowledge of climate and energy finance issues or banking/insurance industry knowledge; or strong interest and willingness to learn about the role of the financial sector in these industries; • Proven track record of working effectively in teams and successful coalition and stakeholder management. • Strong understanding of how to produce ethical and just research, especially when collaborating with frontline and fenceline communities, Indigenous people, and historically marginalized groups. • Excellent written communication in English (strong communication skills in a second language is a plus); experience writing and producing reports. • Strong analytical, decision-making, strategic facilitation and prioritization skills • Excellent project management and organizational skills; • Ability to handle simultaneous deadlines and work independently; • Ability to work collaboratively and demonstrates curiosity, openness to feedback, good judgement, and problem solving. • Commitment to racial justice and equity, and an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations; • Ability to travel for up to 20% of the time COMPENSATION This is a full-time position with an anticipated salary range equivalent to $94,000-$104,000 USD commensurate with experience and location. The position is remote and open to candidates based in the US, UK or Europe who are able to work across time zones. RAN has staff and partners in time zones across the world, and staff are expected to work flexibly in order to connect with colleagues. For staff in the US, benefits include RAN-paid health, dental and vision insurance for the staff person and their partner/family, a retirement plan with a 3% employer match, and a slate of RAN-paid additional coverages. For staff outside the US, reimbursements for healthcare and pension/retirement are available. All staff, regardless of location, are eligible for four weeks PTO (increases to five weeks after two years) as well as a paid winter break, a 12-week paid sabbatical after every 5 years of service.
