Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is seeking a proactive and customer-focused Senior Communications Specialist to play a vital role in supporting safe, reliable, and timely commuter rail service across Northern and Central Virginia. Reporting to the Director of Rail Operations, this position serves as a key link between operations, passengers, and the public—managing real-time communications, coordinating service updates, and ensuring consistent, high-quality information delivery across all VRE channels. This position is essential to our daily operations and may require work during nonstandard hours, including service cancellations, emergencies, and special events. Minimum Qualifications and Experience • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in customer communications, public information, or transportation operations. • Demonstrated ability to manage real-time communications during service disruptions or emergencies. • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate technical information for public audiences. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms. • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with flexibility to work nonstandard hours as needed. • Valid driver’s license, current auto insurance, and a safe driving record. • Willingness to obtain AED/CPR, Rules Certification, and Roadway Worker Protection certification within one year of employment. Preferred Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, transportation management, or a related field. • Experience in public sector, transit, or rail industry communications. • Familiarity with FRA regulations and railroad operations. • Experience in digital communications, social media strategy, or emergency communications management.
