About the Role We are seeking a visionary and strategic Director of Data to build and lead our organization’s dedicated data function from the ground up. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for both defining and executing the company’s data strategy. This transformational opportunity will drive enterprise-wide innovation, efficiency, and competitive advantage by establishing a modern data ecosystem and strengthening the foundation for a truly data-driven organization. This is a hybrid position, requiring 2–3 days per week in the office, with occasional U.S. travel (primarily to our New Jersey and Washington State offices). Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Vision • Develop and execute a comprehensive Data, BI, and AI strategy aligned with long-term business goals and regulatory requirements • Champion a data-driven culture and serve as a strategic advisor across the organization • Establish enterprise-wide data governance frameworks, policies, and ethical AI standards • Partner with senior leadership to identify high-impact opportunities where data and AI drive performance • Define and communicate the roadmap for data infrastructure, analytics capabilities, and AI maturity Data Ecosystem Development • Design and implement a scalable, secure data architecture for analytics, AI/ML, and BI • Build governance frameworks for data quality, metadata, and lineage • Lead Master Data Management (MDM) and system-wide data integration strategies • Develop modern data lake and warehouse solutions for operational and analytical needs • Ensure compliance with data privacy and security regulations • Enable self-service data discovery and cataloging across the enterprise Team Building & Leadership • Build, mentor, and lead a multidisciplinary team of data engineers, analysts, and AI specialists • Define clear roles, responsibilities, and career paths within the data organization • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence • Develop partnerships with universities, vendors, and research groups to attract talent • Promote enterprise-wide data literacy and education Stakeholder Management & Collaboration • Translate business strategy into actionable data initiatives • Partner cross-functionally to ensure alignment and integration • Manage relationships with technology vendors and consultants • Present strategic insights and updates to executive leadership • Serve as the organizational lead for data governance discussions Technology & Infrastructure • Oversee the selection and implementation of modern data platforms and tools • Ensure infrastructure is scalable, reliable, and cost-effective • Define and execute a cloud and hybrid data strategy • Implement real-time and streaming data capabilities • Oversee API development for data sharing and integration Required Qualifications Education & Experience • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field (Master’s or MBA preferred) • 10+ years of progressive experience in data management, analytics, or AI/ML • 5+ years in senior leadership roles, building and scaling data teams • Experience in a complex, regulated, or data-intensive industry strongly preferred • Proven success in establishing a data function from inception to maturity Technical Expertise • Deep knowledge of modern data architecture (data lakes, data mesh, etc.) • Strong experience in data governance, quality management, and MDM • Proficiency with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) • Experience with ETL/ELT, Python, and DataOps frameworks • Familiarity with BI and data visualization tools • Ability to be hands-on in executing the strategy you design Business & Leadership Skills • Strategic thinker who connects data initiatives to business outcomes • Exceptional communication and stakeholder influence skills • Experience driving organizational transformation through data • Strong project and program management capabilities • Financial acumen and experience in building ROI-driven business cases Industry Knowledge • Experience in a regulated or compliance-driven environment • Understanding of data privacy and security requirements • Awareness of trends in AI innovation, digital transformation, and data-driven business models
