Job type and compensation This is a part-time, remote contract position. We expect the Managing Editor to propose the level of time commitment needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the role. The contract will begin with a three-month term, extendable to one year or longer, at a rate of $3,500 per month. Availability for weekly meetings between 10:00am and 2:00pm U.S. Pacific Time is required. The anticipated start date is March 2026. Overview Resilience.org is seeking a remote, contract Managing Editor to take over editorial responsibilities for a magazine-style online publication. Resilience.org is a project of Post Carbon Institute (PCI), a non-profit organization largely based in Oregon, USA with fully remote staff. Resilience.org posts original and re-published articles on a wide range of sustainability issues for a dedicated, international audience. We currently post up to five articles per day from an established roster of authors and content partners, as well as new contributors. Now entering its third decade and with around 1 million visitors annually, Resilience.org is an established and valued voice in the global grassroots sustainability movement. Our mission at Resilience.org is to inform and inspire our audience to strengthen community resilience in the face of our multiple sustainability challenges. We also aim to encourage our audience to explore our other programs that offer deeper engagement, including online events, an online course, publications, and discussions. The Role This is a unique opportunity for an experienced and motivated editor to guide Resilience.org through a period of transition and update it for younger generations of readers and authors. The Managing Editor will be tasked with the following: • All aspects of content publishing, including: article acquisition and curation, copyediting and proofreading (as appropriate), headlines, imagery selection, applying keywords and tags, and posting to our CMS (WordPress). • Keeping current publishing systems running without interruption. Maintaining a minimum posting rate of three articles per weekday; maintain relationships with authors and content partners. • Sustaining the editorial voice of Resilience.org as a trusted and accessible source of information and inspiration about the sustainability challenges of this century, while faithfully reflecting the worldview of Post Carbon Institute. • Collaborating with the PCI Marketing/Communications team on audience outreach and engagement. Collaborating with the PCI Program Director on high-level editorial decisions. • Collaborating with PCI staff on developing a strategy to attract new audiences and authors. We are a small, fully-remote organization that values collaborative decision-making and initiative-taking. You would be working with in-house marketing/communications support, website/tech support, and administrative support. You would also collaborate closely with the PCI Program Director and Marketing/Communications Director as noted above. Requirements • Minimum 5 years of experience managing and/or performing key aspects of the editorial and production process for an online publication (preferably daily or weekly) in English. Solid copyediting skills. • Self-starter, self-manager, able to initiate and execute work independently without supervision. • Experience using an online content management system (WordPress or similar). Fluent with Google Workspace. • Experience using SEO, taxonomies, and website analytics to inform editorial decision-making; familiar with relevant industry norms and trends. • Deep familiarity with current sustainability issues, especially as they relate to community and individual resilience. Conversant with key concepts in sustainability thought, including: systems thinking, ecological economics, net energy, social-environmental resilience, appropriate technology. Able to work with content discussing politically and socially charged topics, including degrowth, techno-optimism, geoengineering, artificial intelligence, etc. (See our for more on our topics, audience, editorial voice, and program goals.)
